"Healing Hills"

Kilrush, Co. Clare
Client: Health Service Executive (HSE) Limerick (2015)
12 x 76x61cm framed acrylic paintings

Using his architectural skills, Francis has been able to create a work of art that enhances an otherwise blank and dull space, transforming it into a breathing space that uplifts both patients and staff in Regina House Community Nursing Unit in Kilrush, Co. Clare. The artwork, in acrylic, is a series of 12 x 76 x 61cm paintings that flow into each other, accentuating the hallway and ramp of the unit. The concept process was collaborative, ensuring that the HSE and management were involved in creating the look of the art. By focusing on a colour scheme of orange (cheering, energizing), yellow (improves depression), green (soothing), blue (antiseptic, stress-reduction), pink (health, grief-soothing) and purple (spirituality), the artwork maximizes the healing and uplifting power of colour. The smooth curvilinear motif reflects the seas near Kilrush and the soft hills of Co. Clare; “bringing in” the landscapes of Clare to remind patients/users of the environment it is situated in while softening the look of the interior space. It also highlights how a healthy environment is essential for health & well-being.

"Landscapes + Memories"

Cloonakilla National School, Co. Roscommon
Client: Cloonakilla NS (Completion Summer 2017)
7 x 76x61cm framed acrylic paintings
500x3500mm printed vinyl on foamboard

As the new school building rises, the old building is reminisced in a series of 7 framed acrylic paintings that form a continuous natural scene, reflecting the green rolling hills of Roscommon. The building and the school well will remind people of the school’s roots, and how far the NS could go into the future. The color scheme is also carefully considered: green as the key color to stimulate learning, blue for calming, and purple for imagination and creativity. The colourful silhouettes of happy, playing children also reflect the school mission of diversity/uniqueness, openness, experience and society. The tall graphic continues the art through to the 2-storey high atrium for maximum visual effect. The art thus blends well with the architecture.

The Rose Room,
University Maternity Hospital Limerick

Univ. Maternity Hospital Limerick, Co. Limerick
Client: HSE Limerick (Completion Summer 2017)
Project Fund awarded through competition by the Irish Hospice Foundation

The goal is to have a Rose Compassion Room in University Maternity Hospital, Limerick where women or couples will be guaranteed a gentle, safe atmosphere to be cared for with compassion when being given sensitive pregancy news. Having a suitable, empathic space lessens not only the stress and trauma to the patients, but also to the healthcare professionals and caregivers, too. The Rose Room was inaugurated with the Irish Hospice Foundation (whom through a competitive process provided the funding), and has since provided a private, dignified sanctuary within (but feels miles away from) a typically sterile hospital space. It is hoped that this approach in interior design becomes a model for other hospitals in Ireland.
