June Bank Holiday weekend in Dublin is always Bord Bia Bloom weekend, and this year it falls on the 28th May - 1st June. What people typically envision are prize-winning dahlias or show-stopping garden designs.
However, as an interior designer, I view this event as one of the most important dates on the Irish design calendar. While the flowers are undoubtedly the star attractions, a whole variety of design inspiration can found at the Phoenix Park, even for interior design.
According to their website:
Bord Bia Bloom, Ireland’s most celebrated festival of gardening, food, and sustainable living, returns for its 20th year on the June bank holiday weekend, 2026. From vibrant show gardens and delicious Irish food to inspiring talks and hands-on workshops, it heralds the start of summer as a feast for the senses and a joy for all ages. Across a 70-acre site in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, the festival offers five unforgettable days filled with live entertainment, interactive experiences, shopping, dining and endless opportunities to grow, taste, and learn. Whether you're a seasoned gardener, a curious foodie, or simply looking for a great day out, Bloom has something for everyone.
Everyone, I repeat, even fans of interior design!
Retail Therapy for the Designer at Heart
One of my first stops is always the Grand Pavilion. For anyone interested in interior design, this area is a goldmine. It features a multitude of exhibitors showcasing the latest in Irish homewares, furniture and decor. It is the perfect place to spot emerging trends before they hit the mainstream shops.
I also highly recommend spending time in the Irish Craft Village. As a designer, I believe a home needs "soul," and you find that Celtic soul in handmade crafts. Whatever you pick, these items provide the texture and story that make a room feel personal rather than generic.
Bord Bia Bloom: Bringing the Outside In
One of the biggest trends in modern interior design is biophilia. Biophilia is the practice of connecting our indoor living spaces with the natural world - I even wrote about this in a previous blog. Bord Bia Bloom is the ultimate showcase for this.
If you are looking to refresh your indoor sanctuary, head straight to the Plant Emporium and Nursery Village. Here, you can learn how to treat your houseplants as interior design and architectural elements. A well-placed palm tree or a collection of sculptural succulents can positively change the entire energy and vibe of a room, while keeping indoor air clean.
Bridging the Gap Between Interiors and Biophilia
As an interior designer, I am particularly fascinated by the "Small Gardens" and "Balcony" categories. These exhibits are masterclasses in how to treat a small outdoor space as a literal extension of your indoor living spaces.
In the concept images I made above, gardens can also inspire the theme, colour palette and decor of interior designs. The overall effect of introducing garden or botanical themes, plus actual plants, in interior spaces are always inspiring.
Even if you aren't someone with a "green thumb," you will leave Phoenix Park with a phone full of colour-palette inspiration and design ideas. Bord Bia Bloom reminds us that our homes do not end at the back door; they should flow to the outdoor ecosystem, and like plants allow us to breathe and, well, bloom.
